  1. Samaria Gorge

The visit to the Samaria Gorge is necessary during your holiday in Crete. It is the largest gorge in Europe and the best route to Crete.

The plateau of Omalos is 39 km from Chania with a stop in the village of Lakki. there is the cave Tzanis, the deepest in Greece, with a depth of 280 meters. At the end of the plateau is the entrance of the Samaria Gorge, which is called  Xyloskalo. It takes 6-8 hours to cross the wonderful gorge of Samaria. If you are lucky you can see or even meet the famous Kri-Kri (Capra aegagrus cretica) or some of the rarest birds in Europe such as the bearded vulture, the golden eagle and the Hieraaetus (eagle of Bonelli). At the end of Samaria Gorge there is the quiet, seaside village of Agia Roumeli, with beautiful sea with crystal clear waters. You can stay there for a couple of days or take a boat and visit also Loutro and Sfakia.

From Sfakia you will take the bus to return to Chania. This is around one hour drive by car passing from the gorge of Imvros and Askifou Plateau.

  1. The Botanical Park

Also near the village of Lakki is the Botanical Park. A sign will show you the way to the Park, to this unique heaven on earth. The Botanical Park of Crete is the only park – garden in Europe and it is also unique in the world for its great biodiversity. There are over 150 different types of fruit trees from around the world with hundreds of these varieties, dozens of different herbs – spices and medicinal plants and also hundreds of different ornamental plants.
